Networking is a method that is used to build relationships. These relationships could be with classmates, co-workers, business partners, vendors, service providers and even family. We often attend family reunions where we meet new and distant relations. This is an excellent vehicle for networking. Networking is the process of discovering and using connections between people. Many of these connections actually stem from already established friendships and business relations. Networking is the ability to explore all of your relationships and utilize them to help you to move closer to your long-term goals.

Think of a computer network. You are the central server. Whenever you come across another server with information you wish to access, you need to build a connection with routers and cabling to reach the information contained on that server

1. Why do I get disconnected after 4 hours of use?

  • You will get disconnected because of the limited number of ports and the fact that 90% of all users do not need to be connected more than 4 hours, all units have been set to a 4-hour time limit.

  • If you require more time, you should disconnect gracefully before the time limit and reconnect so that you do not loose your work.

2. Why not use an 800 number all the time?

  • Using an 800 number costs the corporation 5 cents a minute versus calling a local number when available that costs 5-7 cents one time charge to initiate the call with no per minute charges.

3. Do I have to be connected when Email comes in or to prepare Email?

  • No, Email is stored in your server until you need to access it.

  • The proper way to handle Email when working remotely is to make a connection periodically during the day pulling your mail down and then disconnecting.

  • You can prepare your Email in the offline mode.

  • When you make your next connection to process incoming mail all prepared mail can be sent at this time.

4. What about reconnection issues?

  • If you are running Windows 95, NT, 2000 or XP making reconnections should be as simple as clicking on the icon to reconnect.

5. How do I speed up my dial-in connection?

  • Only install the necessary protocols.

  • Usually IP is the only one needed unless you are accessing Novell Servers.

  • Never install NetBEUI.

  • A good practice, if only accessing Novell Servers occasionally, is to create two configurations, one with IP access only and one with both IP and IPX. Use the second configuration only when required.

6. Why can’t I see all of the NT units in the Network Neighborhood?

  • When you dial into the Network Access Gateway you are normally on a segment without a master browser, which is how units are displayed in the Network Neighborhood.

  • This does not mean that you cannot access the unit however.

  • If the unit you are trying to access is a member of the corporate WINS structure and you have configured your remote unit per the configuration instructions, WINS will automatically resolve the units IP address when you Map a drive in Explorer.

  • The key to this is to know the computer name and share name that you require before starting the process.

7. Why does my Dial-Up Networking fail to work after loading AOL?

  • AOL sometimes replaces the TCP/IP Winsock driver, causing your PC perform erratically or not at all.

Fix:

1. Delete all references to TCP/IP from the network neighborhood properties.

2. Reboot the system.

3. Add the Microsoft TCP/IP protocol back in.

This will automatically add TCP/IP to all adapters and you should be functional again.

8. Can I use Network Address Translation (NAT) to attach my home computers via VPN?

  • In general NAT is not supported by the IPSEC VPN client.

  • Routers such as the Linksys BEFSR11 and BEFSR41 do support VPN with a software workaround.

  • NAT implementations may be used if One-to-One NAT is used.

9. Why can’t I get higher speed on my 56K v.90 modem into some NAG sites?

  • A 56k v.90 modem is asymmetric by design, so download speed can be as much as 56k but upload speed will be only up to 33.6bps.

  • For 56k to work, there must be only one analogue to digital (A/D) conversion in your local phone loop.

  • Thus when modems at both ends are analogue, 56k speeds will never be achieved as most PSTN Exchanges run digital routing.

  • Some NAG sites use analogue phone lines with Cisco and standard 56k modems, while most PCs dialing up use a similar modem.

  • Between both the modems, it limits the download speed to about 33.6kbps maximum.

  • At the same time, many users might experience lower connection speeds due to other reasons, such as more poor line quality.

  • These factors will also contribute to the quality and speed of the line.

10. When I load the Extranet Client on my PC and Winpoet is installed on my machine, it crashes or does not work properly.

  • There are known issues running Winpoet software on the PC with the Nortel Extranet (VPN) Client.

  • To repair your system, boot in safe mode and uninstall the Winpoet Software.

  • A simple solution is to have users install the Linksys BEFSR41 hardware router.

  • It has a firmware PPPOE connector, which eliminates Winpoet from the PC and provides the added benefit a NAT firewall for the user with the ability to hook up to three other PCs.

  • A second option is to find a PPPOE Client that does not interfere with VPN Clients.

  • If you have WINPOET, please check with your local ISP to confirm it will work with the Nortel VPN client.

  • If not, or if they are not sure, please do not install the new client, or ask your ISP to find an alternative PPPOE Client that does not interfere with the Nortel VPN Client.

  • If you decide to use Winpoet with the new Nortel VPN client, Nortel strongly recommends using Winpoet 6.0 or higher.

  • Earlier versions of the Winpoet software are known to cause conflicts with the Nortel VPN client.

  • If you have Winpoet on your PC and experience problems (i.e. with an earlier version prior to 6.0) the following 8 steps will safely uninstall the Winpoet Software from your pc and repair your system to boot properly.

1. Login to Safe Mode.

2. Login under Admin profile.

3. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Extranet Client. Do NOT reboot at the prompt.

4. Check to see if Winpoet adapter is installed. If so remove it.

5. Go to device manager/network adapters. Right click Winpoet or Winport adapter. Uninstall.

6. Go to Admin Tools./Services and disable Winpoet-over-ethernet.

7. Reboot PC.

8. Reinstall the extranet VPN client.

An alternative solution is to install the Linksys BEFSR41 hardware router. It has a firmware PPPOE connector, which eliminates the need of Winpoet from the PC.

11. My ISP remains connected and I have no known problem with my Internet Service Provider. The problem is intermittent.

  • Check the version of your Contivity Extranet Access client.

  • You should be using the current release of the client, 4.65 or higher. You can view the most current version by clicking on Current Version.

12. I am having problems with my VPN connection.

  • Try isolating the problem by process of elimination.

1. Is your Internet connection to the public Internet working properly?

2. Do you have the most current version of the Contivity Extranet Access client?

3. Have you recently installed any new software or hardware?

4. Were any hardware or software changes made since your VPN connection was last working?

5. Have you scanned your computer for Viruses?

  • If you are still experiencing problems, try uninstalling or removing the following items.

1. Disable your firewall, anti-virus software and any other maintenance or Security programs installed.

Try to connect.

2. Remove your router from your configuration.

Connect your PC directly to your Internet connection.

This is accomplished by connecting the cable coming out of your DSL/Cable modem, directly into your network card or USB connector.

If successful, the problem might be your router’s setup or firmware.

Refer to your manufacturer’s website or documentation for troubleshooting your router or contact the Vendor directly for support.

You must upgrade your firmware.

Please beware even though you might have just recently purchased your router, it might have been packaged with an older version of the software.

3. Enable your router, firewall/internet security programs one at a time.

Cable/DSL users: If you have a dial-up modem installed on your PC, try to test using a dialup connection.

Either use dialup to an ISP and then use VPN or dialup directly into your Network.

13. The upgrade to release 4.6X of the VPN client failed.

  • Refer to the list below and see if any of this applies:

Windows XP Disable the XP firewall.

VPN Software Most VPN clients cannot co-exist on the same machine.

Windows ME Remove and Add TCP/IP protocol.

Brother Multifunction Printer You may not be running the current Brother software for your printer. Windows 2000. Users should download drivers/software from the Brother website at http://www.brother.com or contact Brother for support.

14. How can I remove and re-install TCP/IP Protocol?

  • Below are instructions on how to remove and add TCP/IP for Windows 2000. (Refer to your operating system’s help screens, web support and/or documentation for instructions, if you are not using Windows 2000.)

  • Please be sure, no matter which operating system you use, that you elect to restart when finished (as prompted) or restart between each process.

  • For Windows 2000 you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure.

Remove TCP/IP

1. Open Network and Dial-up Connections, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.

2. Right-click any network connection, and then click Properties.

3. On the General tab (for a local area connection) or the Networking tab (all other connections), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Uninstall.

4. In the Uninstall Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) dialog box, click Yes.

Install TCP/IP

5. Open Network and Dial-up Connections. (Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections.)

6. Right-click the network connection for which you want to install and enable TCP/IP, and then click Properties.

7. On the General tab (for a local area connection) or the Networking tab (all other connections), if Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not in the list of installed components, then do the following:

A. Click Install.

B. Click Protocol and then click Add.

C. In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.

D. Verify that the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box is selected, and then click OK.

TCP/IP is installed as the default network protocol if network adapter hardware was detected during Windows 2000 Setup. You only need to follow these instructions if the TCP/IP default selection was overridden during Setup.

15. I am using Windows XP Home or Professional and am unable to get to certain websites or resource servers when connected using VPN.

  • There are some known issues when using the Contivity Nortel client 4.60 on a PC running Windows XP.

  • The older version of the Nortel client (version 3.70) will fix the problem; however, the ultimate goal is to upgrade to the current version.

  • Please do not reinstall version 3.7X as a fix.

16. My ISP provider requires the installation of WinPoET. Can I use it with the latest release of the client?

  • If you are using WinPoET, it must be version 6.0 or higher of WinPoET.

  • Check with your ISP and request v6.0 or higher of WinPoET.

17. After installing v8.0 of AOL, I’ve experienced problems with my connections to my Network.

  • Users may experience problems with Windows Outlook email.

  • You must create two separate profiles; one profile as a Remote Connection (POP3) account for your AOL Internet email and another profile for a local LAN connection to your corporate Network email.

Here’s how: to do

1. Go to Start, Control Panel, Mail, Services, Show Profiles and Add the second profile.

2. Make sure the button “Prompt for a profile to be used” under General tab of MS Outlook properties is selected.

3. Disable the ATWPKT2 driver. (The files ATKPKT2.SYS and ATKPKT2.VXD are located in the AOL directory under PROGRAM_FILESCOMMON_FILES.)

18. I’m Unable to obtain an IP address while “Hotelling”.

  • When working remotely from a Hotel (Hotelling), you must launch your Internet explorer first to try and obtain an IP address.

  • If you just launch VPN, you won’t have obtained an IP address, and VPN may fail.

  • Disable your firewall, as the hotel may recommend.

19. Why do I get No Domain Available when dialing my ISP?

  • On your Internet Service Providers (ISP) dial connection, right click the mouse and select the properties button.

  • Click on the Server Type tab and make sure that the “Log On To Network” box is unchecked, otherwise you will hang trying to log into the Network when trying to connect.

20. Why do I run so slowly when using my VPN connection?

  • On your Internet Service Providers (ISP) dial connection.

  • Right click the mouse

In the real world, businesses come in every size, from self-employed entrepreneurs like me to mega malls like Wal-Mart.

On the Internet, companies come in every size, too, from a stand-alone ebook sales page with webmaster and owner all in one, to 300 pound gorilla like Amazon, with over a million pages requiring the entire population of a small country to serve as webmaster.

If your site is a single page, it is its own network. But if your site is any bigger, and you have plans to grow, it is a network or is fast becoming one. You need network monitoring.

Most ecommerce webmasters are at least somewhat familiar with website monitoring. Many use a website monitoring service or software to keep track of “uptime” and “downtime”.

At your local shopping mall, serious business requires more than just knowing when the front doors are open and when they are closed. Serious ecommerce needs to know more than just when the site is accessible. That is what network monitoring is all about.

Chances are, your e-business owns one of the following, or uses one of the following remotely:

DNS servers: These are used to translate your site name, like www.mycompany.com, to the numbers called “IP addresses” that computers understand. If DNS servers are not working properly, end-users will not be able to find your site and will get an error. Usually only an external or remote monitoring service will detect such a problem.

An FTP server: File Transfer Protocol servers are used to help you Exchange files with remote users. If you use FTP, a monitoring service can make sure it is always up and running.

POP3 and SMTP servers: These are used for exchanging emails. If you are using email, chances are you are using SMTP and POP3. If your SMTP server is down, everyone who sends you email will receive an error, stating that your mail server is down and cannot accept incoming email. To say that the impression this leaves your customers is bad would be an understatement. If your POP3 server is down, you will be unable to retrieve email from your mailbox. Once again, only external monitoring will prevent such a problem.

Firewalls: Many businesses use firewalls to protect their internal network from un-authorized traffic, such as spyware, viruses and sabotage by competitors. Furthermore, a firewall is your first line of defense. If your firewall goes down, your whole network may actually become inaccessible from outside. In other words, if you host your own web site and mail servers, those will become inaccessible to the outside world if your firewall goes down. Once again, remote network monitoring is required to detect that a problem exists and quickly get it repaired.

Internet connections: Users come to your network from multiple backbones, depending on the company they use to connect to the Internet and their location. It is important to ensure that your connection performs well for each user. A remote monitoring service can ping your networks from multiple locations around the world, thus testing most major routes to your web server or network. Before hiring a network monitoring service, check to see that they have both your customer geography and the Internet backbone layout covered.

Very few websites of any size and functionality are anything less than a complete network, and many networks rely on servers in different parts of the world.

A good network monitoring service can ensure, as a base, that all servers are properly functioning, that data can be sent to and received from each server, and that each function sharing the server responds as required. An advanced network monitoring service can even remotely monitor the temperature of your servers.

What you need to monitor depends on how extensive your network is. A network monitoring expert can help you determine what needs monitoring. If you own the servers, or are remotely hosted on dedicated servers, you most likely need everything monitored. If your site is hosted on shared servers, you might need fewer functions monitored.

One of the questions I get asked time and time again is “How can I make my PDA (Windows Mobile or iPhone) synchronise with my PC?” – Well, it’s all about having the right platform in place first then the problem becomes an easy one to solve. Most people asking this question have POP mail and this is usually the reason things just don’t work for them.

The answer I always give when asked this question is “You need Exchange” – nothing beats having full control of your emails and also the ability to access them in multiple locations (PC, laptop or PDA). Traditionally only businesses able to have their own server(s) could have Exchange and this restricted use to companies of a certain size, usually 8-10 users or more. Thus smaller businesses chose POP3 because of a lack of access to Exchange and to be honest because POP mail is simply to manage and setup. You can have your emails delivered directly to your Outlook or Outlook Express in minutes – setting up POP3 does not require expert know how.

However, Exchange is a much more business friendly option and is now available in ‘Hosted Exchange’ versions via standard hosting providers such as 1and1 and Fasthosts. some of the reasons why you should consider a move to Exchange are noted below:

Full Mailbox Access

Anytime, anywhere access from multiple locations and/or clients via Outlook Web access (accessing your emails via the web). With POP3, when you download messages to your mailbox, they are stored on your local PC and removed from the server of the host company. This means you are unable to view the message elsewhere. With Exchange you view a central version of your email so where ever you look at this version, be it on your PC, laptop or PDA, the email status is the same.

Sharing and Collaboration

The only thing that takes more time than attending meetings is planning and scheduling them! When you use Exchange with Outlook, you can quickly and easily check availability of co workers, conference rooms, and shared resources by viewing multiple calendars side by side. No more chasing down people and keeping track of responses. Using Exchange, you can also share any folder in your Mailbox and any files in your public folders. The amount of time saved by the increase in productivity easily makes up for the price of Exchange. With POP3, there is no sharing or collaboration.

Public Folders

Instead of having multiple copies of emails, templates, pictures etc…one in every mailbox, you can store them all in Public Folders once – saving a tremendous amount of storage space….. and providing access for other users and staff.

Backups

This is the biggie! Up to 70% of your business data is in Outlook. With Exchange, a copy of all of your data is stored on your local PC and another copy remains on the server. If your computer crashes, configuring a new computer with the existing mailbox information will bring all of the data once lost back down in its entirety….to the new computer. This option does not exist if you use POP3. If you lose your data, you lose your data. That’s it!

Synchronization with Mobile Devices

You can access your e-mail, contacts, and calendar from your iPhone and Windows Mobile Devices. Full synchronization does not occur with a POP3 and all you get are messages downloaded to your PDA and then removed from the source. Exchange allows for a 2-way wireless synchronisation on email, calendars and tasks so if you download a message to the PDA, read it and then reply, the message is shown as read on your PC and the reply you sent from the PDA is shown in the sent items on your PC. Brilliant!

Exchange is the way to resolve many of the problems associated with SME email management. It’s now at a price and level that can be adopted by anyone from one user upwards so maybe it’s time to re-think your email setup policy?

A network is a group of computers, printers, and other devices that are connected together with cables. The sharing of data and resources. Information travels over the cables, allowing network users to Exchange documents

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an efficient and secured communication protocol to share or transfer large files from one computer to another, which is located at remote area and connected with World Wide Web. In general we are familiar with Email for exchanging information over the Internet. It is observed that Email is not an efficient medium to serve all the purposes of sharing digital information. General Email services do not support large files moreover, the type of the files matters for some services. Since the upper limit of the file size is specified in Email service therefore you can’t send large files over communication network.

FTP hosting services, on the other hand, allow us to transfer large digital files by protecting the content from unauthorized entities. Initially files are uploaded in the FTP server, which is a registered space in the server allocated for the user. This allocated space is known as FTP site and stores all the files, which are uploaded by the client. People who are authorized to access the allocated site can access the files through their individual FTP account. In HTTP the size of the file matters but in FTP you are free to transfer large files irrespective of their content and type.

General objective of File Transfer Protocol are:

  • Sharing/transferring digital files over the Internet irrespective size and type
  • Encouraging indirect use of remote computer
  • Maintaining the privacy of the content using file storage system

Upload Large Files

The size and number of files depend upon the space that is allocated for you in the FTP site. If you have 3GB space in your FTP server then depending on that you can upload files in the server. FTP hosting service will allow you to upload files in the server based on the remaining free space of your FTP server. You cannot exceed the space that is allocated for you. Files are uploaded in the server as a copy. Files, which are uploaded in the FTP server, will automatically occupy some space based on their individual size.

It is recommended to zip the files before uploading them in the server. This will reduce the actual size of the file and help you to save space. Moreover FTP hosting service comes with the feature of splitting up a large file in multiple parts. This will reduce the size of each part and increase the speed of transferring files in a FTP server from a remote computer. The allocation of space varies from one user to another based on their choice. You are free to select the space for your FTP site. You have to pay more to the FTP hosting service provider to get sufficient space. It is observed that if you have standard FTP service, you can easily share or transfer files of size around 300MB. However, as it was told earlier, that the size of the files will depend upon the selection of FTP service.

Store files in the FTP server

You have to mention the duration of FTP service during the registration process. Based on your application, FTP hosting service provider will allocate space for you in the FTP site that will remain active for a given period. Files, which are uploaded in the server, will stay unaffected unless any authorized user removes that file from the server. So if you do not delete any uploaded file from the server it will remain there till the end of your FTP service period.

Therefore, the duration of storing files in the FTP server depends upon the choice of the individuals. FTP hosting service provider will allocate a service period based on your choice. You have to pay more to get long term FTP hosting service.

Number of Client

FTP Client and FTP Server are two major components of FTP hosting service. You can upload or download files from FTP server through FTP client. You can allocate number of clients based on the requirements of remote users in the business process. Moreover, from the administration panel you can set permission to read and/or write the files. Based on your request FTP hosting service provider will allow you to create the specified number of clients to Exchange information. The cost for FTP hosting service will depend upon the number of clients. On the other hand, there will be an impact on the allocated space in the server by changing the number of client. The frequency of file transmission may increase if you create more clients for the allocated space in the FTP server. This may reduce the size of free space in the FTP server. Therefore, it is recommended to optimize the number of FTP client for a server based on the requirement in the business process.

FTP Packages

The features of FTP hosting services are designed to support stable and secured communication process. FTP package or FTP software are used to upload or download files of any size and/or type to and from external and internal servers. FTP package provides reliability, data integrity and efficient service during the transaction process. Connections are initiated by the remote file transfer server (commonly known as FTP Client) following web-based transfer protocols like – FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP with SSL, TSL or SSH. Selection of FTP package depends upon the choice of the customer.

FTP Hosting – an overview

The term FTP stands for ‘File Transfer Protocol’. In this era of Internet technology transferring files over the Internet is a common phenomenon. FTP hosting service allows us to upload as well as download large amount of files by keeping necessary security measures. If you are unaware about FTP – you are missing something that can simplify the file Exchange process of your business.

FTP hosting service comes with storage system where you can upload the copy of a file, irrespective of the size and content. This storage acts as FTP server or FTP Site. You can transfer the files efficiently from one location to another through this FTP server. People who are authorized to access your FTP server can download or delete the files.

Be it a small firm or large organization, companies are taking complete advantage of Internet technology in their business process. In general people are familiar with HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), which comes with a set of rules for transferring files, irrespective of the content (text, image, video, audio, multimedia etc.). With the pace of time, people started realizing the importance of File Transfer Protocol in business process.

FTP hosting for business process

How can you think about transferring files in a secure mode without FTP? In a business process you need to Exchange information from one node to another. That information may be simple text, image or a huge multimedia. In a business process you need to Exchange files with vendors as well as clients and there is nothing better than FTP hosting service that takes complete care of your objectives. Be it a heavy engineering sector or a busy law firm, you can efficiently Exchange the files through FTP hosting service.

FTP hosting works like blessing in Transcription business. Compared to other business processes, the size of each file is large in transcription business. Moreover, you need to Exchange files efficiently with clients and transcriptionists. In a transcription business you need to maintain several accounts for the transcriptionists and clients. With FTP hosting service you can easily take manage the distribution of files between them. FTP hosting service not only allows you to exchange large files over the Internet but also provides the facility of creating multiple accounts to simplify the business process.

Internet based Transcription Business

The nature of transcription business has changed with the introduction of BPO (business Process Outsourcing) or KPO (Knowledge Process Outsourcing) in the business sector. Today transcription business services are done over the Internet to increase the pace of business process.

In general, we can categorize transcription services in five different sectors – Medical (Medical Transcription Services), Legal (Legal Transcription Services), General Business (Business Transcription Services), Digital (Digital Transcription Services) and Word Processing (Word Processing Services).

In Medical Transcription Service you have to transcribe medical reports, patient progress reports, reviews for the clients. Legal Transcription Services, on the other hand transcribes comprehensive legal reports and general correspondences. Digital Transcription Services create transcribed documents from audio files. In Word Processing Services you have to create research papers, manuals, database, desktop publishing and other types of documents. Therefore, FTP hosting service is necessary to exchange files and transcribed files between clients and transcriptionists.

Security feature in Transcription Business

Security is an important issue in Internet based transcription business. You need to maintain separate accounts for the transcriptionists to interact with the clients. FTP hosting services comes with the facility of separate FTP account. You can create as many accounts as you want for the transcriptionists. Each transcriptionist will interact with the client through his/her own account. Since passwords are unique for FTP accounts, therefore you can easily restrict transcriptionists to access the files from others’ FTP account. Moreover, a user cannot delete any file from FTP site without proper username and password.

Advantages of FTP Hosting in Transcription Business

By implementing FTP hosting service in the business, you can efficiently manage transcription services and improve the speed of the business process by maintaining required security. Other than transferring large files from one computer to another through FTP site, you can also send Emails with large attachments. Some common features are – Sending mail with attachment to several people (clients and transcriptionists). FTP service acts like magic for people who are using slow dial up links. They can efficiently download large files from FTP site irrespective of the dial up speed.

Finally, FTP hosting services comes with a web based interface through which you can administer all the FTP accounts in your business process. You have to provide separate FTP user account and password to each client to upload or download files from the FTP server. By this one client will never view the transcribed documents, which are uploaded in FTP site for other clients.

Transferring layout and blueprints over the Internet

Problem in transferring large blueprints or layout over the Internet is a common problem for architects. As an architect you need a secure and efficient medium to send large digital files to clients and customers. It is observed that the process of sending files from one computer to another often terminates when the file size exceeds the limit. To overcome this hurdle you can break a single large file in multiple small files and send them through Email as an attachment. Clients or customers, who are receiving the files, will integrate the parts to get the original content of the large file.

For architects, the process is not efficient at all. Breaking the digital format of a blueprint or layout into several parts and then integrating them to get the original image may create problem for clients and customers. Also, it is not desirable that the client or customer can efficiently integrate the parts. Though it is true that business organizations are more familiar with Email services to communicate with the clients and customers however, Email is not the right medium to send large files.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) hosting service can be the right option for architects to transfer large digital layouts and blueprints on the World Wide Web, keeping the content unchanged. For an architect it is necessary to Exchange information (text and/or image) with the customers and to maintain the security of business content. FTP hosting service not only ensures efficient transmission of large files over the Internet but also restricts unauthorized third party from accessing the information.

Why FTP for Architects?

Be it a large architect firm or a home business, File Transfer Protocol is a suitable communication protocol to transfer images and confidential content, irrespective of file size and type. Architects use FTP as an efficient mode for transferring large files:

  • Multimedia Presentation
  • Interior and Exterior Designs
  • Master Plan, Blueprint and Layout
  • Confidential Financial Data
  • Consultancy

FTP hosting services come with all the features, which are sufficient to transfer designs and images through a given network. An architect requires a suitable medium not only to Exchange business communication with the clients but also to share information and designs in digital format.

Just think about a secure space in the server, allocated only for your business and only the authorized clients can access information from there. FTP hosting service provider will allocate necessary space in the server based on the requirement of your business process. Files are Exchanged between the remote computers via this server.

Architects use FTP hosting service to develop 3D preview of the architecture for the client, to display audio and/or video presentation of a project and to Exchange password protected plans and designs. The choice of using public or secured FTP server is based on the requirement. It is recommended to use private FTP hosting service to protect the privacy of the design and content from your rivals. Many people things Electronic Commerce is just having a web site, but Electronic Commerce is much more than that. There are dozens of applications of Electronic Commerce such as home banking, shopping in online stores and malls, buying stocks, finding a job, conducting an auction and collaborating electronically on research and development projects.

Electronic Commerce applications are supported by infrastructures and their implementation is dependent on four major areas such as

1.people

2.public policy

3.technical standards

4.protocols and organizations

Peoples – Buyers, sellers, intermediaries, services etc.

public policy – Taxes, legal, and privacy issues, domain names.

technical standards – For documents, securities, and network protocols.

Organizations – Partners, competitors, associations, Govt. services.

3.Multimedia content and network publishing infrastructure – HTML, Java, WWW, VRML.

4.Network infrastructure – Telecom, cable, TV, wireless, Internet, WAN, MAN, LAN, Intranet, Extranet.

5.Interfacing infrastructure – To databases, customers and applications.

Electronic Money System Model:

The e-money system is a mechanism that facilitates payments – generally of limited value – in which e-money can be considered as an electronic surrogate for coins and banknotes. The e-money system is described on the basis of a model with a set of sub-systems through which electronic value (EV) is transferred, under the responsibility of a System Supervisor who monitors the security of EV creation, EV extinguishment and EV circulation within the system.

The three main elements which make up our e-money system model are EV, EV circulation between sub-systems and supervision. Put together, these elements constitute the core of the e-money system model. The notions of transactions, compensation, EV life cycle and actors then complete this model.

EV is a monetary value represented by a claim on an EV Issuer, which is:

- stored on an electronic device;

- issued on receipt of funds for an amount not less in value than the monetary value issued;

- accepted as a means of payment by undertakings other than the issuer.

The EV circulation starts with a first phase called EV creation, and ends with a final phase called EV extinguishment.

This model does not impose any restriction on the number of sub-systems that form an e-money system.

Transactions On The Internet:

All the transactions on the internet take place using the customer’s personal computer and the seller’s web server. Customers use a web browser to place on order with the merchant and specify their mode of payment. In the case of an online transaction the customer has the option of paying by credit card or smart card the customers can also to pay using electronic cash or a digital cheque . The software on the seller’s server has to verify the order and has to settle the transaction by receiving authorization for the transfer of funds from a bank or the credit and acquirer. It is possible that the applications on the customer’s, merchant’s and bank’s are not same. Hence the interaction across this step is achieved using a gateway, which is a link between applications.

The gateway allows for protocol conversion and communicates with the bank using the bank’s private network or the internet. Gateway, more specifically common gateway interface (CGI) is a specification for communicating data between an information server, for example server, and other application. CGI is used wherever the web server needs to send or receive data from another application, such as database. A CGI script is a program that negotiates the movement of data between the web server and an outside application. It typically passes data, filled in by the user in an HTML form, from the web server to a database.

Payment System:

In any business transaction, the customer and merchant enter into an agreement. According to this agreement the merchant supplies the goods and services that the customer requests for while the customer transfers funds to the merchant in lien for the goods received. Thus the payment is the most important part in the sales cycle.

The general requirements of payment system’s are-

(1)Confidentiality – the user expects a secure system of payment.

(2)Authentication – A method to verify the buyer’s identity before payment is authorized.

(3)Integrity – It ensuring that information will not be accidentally or maliciously altered or destroyed during transmission.

(4)Authorization – It allows the merchant to determine if the buyer actually has funds to pay for the purchase. The merchant verifies that the customer’s bank account has sufficient balance to honour the cheque amount.

(5)Privacy – There might be situations where both the customer and merchant would want to ensure the privacy of sale. example – a business conducting research might not the details of its purchases.

Types Of Electronic Payments:

The various methods that have been developed for making payments on the internet are electronic versions of the traditional payment systems that we use everyday. In our daily life we use cash, credit cards or cheques to make payments. All these systems are digitally incorporated on the web as e-cash, electronic cheques and credit cards.

(1)Credit Card:

Credit cards are the most popular payment method for cyberspace customer shopping today.

(a) The card holder- A customer or a corporate purchaser who uses credit cards to pay merchants.

(b) The merchant- the entity that accepts credit cards and offers goods or services in Exchange for payments.

(c) The card issuer- A financial institution that establishes accounts for cardholders and issues credit cards.

(d) The acquirer- A financial institution that establishes an accounts for merchants and acquires the vouchers of authorized sales slips.

(2)Electronic Wallet Or Digital Wallet:

Secure electronic transaction (SET) protocol was initially designed by visa and master card in 1997. SET protocol meets the four security requirements for EC as SSL does: authentication, encryption, integrity and non repudiation. In addition, SET defines the message format, certificate format, and procedure of message Exchange. The role of payment gateway is to connect the internet and proprietary networks of banks. Each participating entity needs its own certificates. To keep the consumer’s certificate in his or her personal computer or IC card, software called the electronic wallet or digital wallet.

(3)Debit Card:

It is also known as check card, is a card that authorizes the EFT. EFT ,Designed to transfer a certain amount of money from one account to another. The customer’s terminal can be automatic teller machine (ATM), PC, or telephone terminals. When we use a debit card, the amount is immediately deducted from our checking or savings accounts. The debit card allows we to spend only what is in our bank account.

Advantages Of Using Debit Card :

1.Obtaining a debit card is much easier than obtaining a credit card .

2.Using a debit card instead of writing checks saves you from showing personal identification .

3.Using a debit card frees we from carrying cash, travelers checks or a check book.

4.Marchants accepts debit cards more readily than checks.

(4)Smart Cards:

At present we carry many plastic cards such as credit cards, debit cards, charge cards, diving licenses, health insurance cards, employee or student identification cards and other.

Now for a moment if we think that all these cards are replaced by a single plastic card carrying all the information of the dozen or fifty cards. Not only dose it lighten our load, it makes identification and purchasing easer for us. Credit, debit and charge cards currently store limited information about us in a magnetic stripe. And unlike a smart card, a credit card dose not contain cash – it only contains a number of an account that can be charged.

A smart card can store hundred times more information than a magnetic striped plastic card. A smart contains private user information such as financial facts, private encryption key, account information, credit cards numbers, health insurance information and so on. The current generation of smart cards includes IC chips with programmable functions.

(5)Closed Vs Open Electronic Cash System:

Electronic cash system can be either closed or open.

A closed system implies that the cash value in the IC card can only be recharged from a banks accounts, and the used money, which was collected in the memory of the IC card readers will be transferred to the receivers bank account. The direct transfer between IC cards is prohibited.

In open system allows direct transfer of money value between IC cards. Because Govt. are afraid of the risk of lost traceability money laundering.

Conclusion :

Nowadays the traditional bills and coins are giving way to the electronic money. With the wide spread of Internet this transformation is inevitable. It is obvious that digital cash is the future of Exchange mechanism. It will surely condense many of the prevailing inconveniences such as carrying large amount of cash and will resolve many of the in-security issues experienced today. The electronic money would not only be quicker and cheaper but also more robust and easy to authenticate. People would not be apprehensive in using it as it will respect their privacy and will allow even small merchants to carry out the business all over the world. The digital cash will also reduce the cost of transferring the money internationally, which is quite expensive at present. The electronic money will not replace the traditional form of transaction completely but will facilitate it surely.
